FAQ

Have you always been an artist?

No, When I first discovered Zentangle in 2014, I did not consider myself to be an artist at all. It really is true that anyone can do it. I can follow the deconstructed patterns that Zentangle tangles give me, and from there I can draw beautiful patterns. Years of drawing using this method have given me lots of confidence and shown me a path to creativity that includes a meditative, enjoyable activity that I can do anywhere. Zen Kin has opened a world of joy for me.

How do you come up with the names for your Zen Kin?

I use whatever name pops into my head and if none do, then I use the web and look up names. I have used almost every relative’s name and have even gone to my ancestry information to name them. I find it amusing and endearing when I see one that I named using a dear aunt’s name or someone from my childhood etc.

Why does it have a registered trademark after the words Zen Kin?

Someone that cares about me suggested that I might want to get a registered trademark so that I could sell items with my Zen Kin name, and it seemed like a good idea. The purpose is to own my own brand, and I am glad I have it; but I would love spreading the joy even if it didn’t exist. It gives me a sense of pride to “own” Zen Kin.

What has been the most important part of Zentangle and Zen Kin for you?

Zentangle and becoming a CZT have opened up my world. I now have friends from all over the world, and I feel a part of something that is focused on beautiful art and sharing that art with joy. There is no judgement about each other’s artwork, but only appreciation. The philosophy of the Zentangle method includes many supportive thoughts that have enhanced my life. We start every artwork with Gratitude and Appreciation, and end each artwork with the same. When drawing every day like I do and using these philosophies in drawing, it is easy to carry that over to all life situations. My Zen Kin are important to me because I love them. It is such a joy to me to draw something and then love it so much! I never tire of bringing these characters to life!
